5 Things to Consider with your next Clinic Buildout

Bob Galinsky | October 11, 2017

The market for urgent care medical services is growing rapidly. Kalorama Information estimates that this market is worth $15 billion, and that there are now over 10,000 urgent care locations in the United States.

If you are currently operate an urgent care practice and are planning to expand, this is a great time. However, clinic buildout projects can be very complicated and time-consuming. If not managed properly, they can suck the momentum out of your business expansion.

In order to simplify the buildout process, consider the following 5 questions before you begin:

1. Do you value predictability?

This may seem like a strange question, but it's actually quite relevant. With any construction project, stuff happens and the only thing predictable is that unpredictable things will occur. Do you like dealing with the unpredictable, or do you have someone in charge of the project who can make it more predictable?

2. Is speed to market important?

Getting your clinic open sooner means that you can start generating revenue and offsetting the costs of staff, rent, and other overhead. Making the project more predictable (see above) can often help you get open sooner, rather than being delayed by unforeseen issues.

3. How are you going to ensure brand standards?

Congratulations! Whether you operate one clinic or fifty, you are the proud owner of a brand! Nurturing that brand is something that has to be done consciously, whether it's training to ensure excellent service or consistency in the plans, materials and appearance of your clinics.

4. Are you certain your contractor is giving you the best price and service?

With any construction project, it's important to bid the project out to several candidates. Price isn't the only criteria you'll be using to make a decision, but it's important to know that you're not being taken advantage of. Service is also extremely important. If the general contractor, or some of their subcontractors, get another job, will yours drop in priority?

5. What is peace of mind worth to you?

This is not just a philosophical question - it's practical too. Managing a clinic buildout is a complicated process, with many different actors, strict deadlines and lots of careful coordination. And stuff happens. How much is it worth to you to know that your buildout is in the hands of experts who have done this before?
