Laminates are man-made building products that are formed by fusing together multiple components to make a composite material that can be used as an alternative to wood. For example, MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a type of laminate that is formed by pressing layers of wood fiber together with resin.
Laminates, which are also referred to as engineered surfaces, have a number of qualities that make them a preferred option to wood, especially for commercial construction. These advantages include:
Strength and Durability
Because laminates are made with a protective layer such as melamine (see illustration below), they tend to be very durable. They are also resistant to scratches, stains, spills and other damage.
Low Maintenance
Laminates are stain and moisture resistant and generally only require occasional wiping with a damp cloth. They don't require any special cleaning products or treatments.
Expense
Laminates require less of an investment than utilizing real wood, although they provide the look and feel of wood.
Hygiene
Laminates are non-absorptive and chemical resistant and are a preferred choice in environments such as hospitals or clinics where hygiene is particularly important. Antibacterial and antimicrobial laminates are also available for settings where an extra layer of protection is needed.
Precision
Because cuts and measurements are made by a CNC machine, guided by computers, laminate millwork and casework is extremely precise and consistent from piece to piece.
Variety and Versatility
Laminates are available in a great variety of designs, textures, patterns, finishes, and thicknesses to meet aesthetic and practical needs in all sorts of residential and commercial environments. Laminates can also be "postformed" into curved pieces in order to provide additional design options for items such as countertops.
